About Colin

Colin at work

Colin Cross graduated from the Newark School of Violin Making, with a Distinction, in 1989 and, since then, has worked extensively as a restorer, repairer and maker of fine violins.

As a maker, he specialises in violins and violas with a tonal quality as rich and individual as their texture and finish. Colin also has a nation-wide reputation for sensitive and sympathetic restoration and repair work.

Colin’s instruments are bought and played by principal musicians in many national orchestras including the Opera North, Liverpool Philharmonic and the Halle.

Colin runs a small shop in the Peak District market town of Buxton where he sells his own violins and violas and also keeps a wide stock of instruments by other makers, and in all price ranges. His workshop, on the same site, is where he carries out set-ups, bow re-hairing, and renovates and repairs violins, violas, cellos, double basses and bows, alongside making new instruments.
